Giving without receiving creates a slow leak. The leak is not
Giving without receiving creates a slow leak. The leak is not closed by withholding from those you give to; it is closed by opening the vertical channel so the giving comes from overflow rather than from one's own reserves. Source-marked from Dr. Sue Morter, "From Drained To Nourished," April 2026.
Overgiving is the pattern of consistently outflowing more than is inflowing — to a partner, to family, to clients, to a community, to a cause. The transmission names this as a leak. Crucially, it does not prescribe withholding from the receivers. It prescribes opening the vertical channel so the giver fills from within while continuing to give.
Overgivers often arrive at their pattern through real care, real gifts, real desire to help. The harm is not in the giving; the harm is in the source of the giving. When the source is the giver's reserves — their energy, attention, time, money, emotional capacity — and the reserves are not refilling vertically, the giving slowly empties them.
Common signs the leak is happening:
The transmission's reframe: receiving does not have to come from the same people one gives to. The vertical channel — breath, body, deeper self, source — is the primary refill. Horizontal reciprocity becomes lovely bonus rather than survival necessity.
Once the vertical channel opens, several things happen at once:
