## Summary

[`lc-parsers-as-recipes`](lc-parsers-as-recipes.md) named the
principle: grammar rules are first-class Recipes; AST is bootstrap;
BMF-pattern parsing is the destination. This concept names what falls
out **when that destination is reached for every host language the
body carries an implementation in**.

The body holds four kernel implementations:

- **Python** — [`api/app/services/substrate/`](../../../api/app/services/substrate/) (the production kernel)
- **TypeScript** — [`form/form-kernel-ts/`](../../../form/form-kernel-ts/) (already reaching native parity per the [`form-kernel-comparison.md`](../../../form/kernel-comparison.md) record)
- **Rust** — [`form/form-kernel-rust/`](../../../form/form-kernel-rust/)
- **Go** — [`form/form-kernel-go/`](../../../form/form-kernel-go/)

Each is the same substrate kernel expressed in a different host
language. Each is currently *opaque source* — to understand its
behavior, you read the source files and reason about them; the
substrate doesn't reach inside its own implementation.

Five load-bearing claims when every kernel's host language has a Form
Language cell with BMF-style grammar rules:

- **Inspectable.** Every function in every kernel becomes a `py_FunctionDef` / `ts_FunctionDeclaration` / `rust_fn` / `go_FuncDecl` Form object in the substrate. *"Show me every function that touches the `intern_node` recipe across all four kernels"* becomes one substrate query — and the answer is structurally honest across hosts.
- **Understandable.** The Form-tree representation of a kernel function carries the same structural shape across hosts. Reading the Python kernel and the Rust kernel side-by-side stops being a translation exercise and becomes a structural comparison — same NodeIDs where they agree, different NodeIDs where they differ.
- **Changeable.** A modification to the kernel's behavior expressed as a Form recipe propagates structurally. Editing `intern_node` in the Python source and re-parsing produces a different NodeID; the witness sees the shift; cross-language equivalence becomes a query, not an assertion.
- **Traceable.** Every executing recipe in any kernel can navigate back to its source line via `source_attribution` ([`lc-the-recipe-remembers-its-source`](lc-the-recipe-remembers-its-source.md)). Cross-kernel debugging — *which exact source line in the Rust kernel produced this NodeID?* — is one query.
- **Attributable.** The witness trace pipeline ([`lc-traces-teach-the-recipe`](lc-traces-teach-the-recipe.md)) records not just what fired but *which source span fired it*, in *which kernel*, *via which Language cell*. The body's lived efficacy-record extends down to kernel-implementation choices.

The kernel knowing itself is the same gesture as a cell knowing its
own NodeID is the same gesture as a memory carrying its own
`crc32(file:line)` provenance plane

## The Cross-Kernel Equivalence Property

A Python `intern_node` and a Rust `intern_node` are NOT structurally
equivalent today — they're separate source files in separate languages,
producing separate behaviors that happen to agree at the storage layer.

With BMF grammars for every host language, the equivalence becomes
**checkable**:

The substrate walks both Form trees. Where structural shapes agree
(the same composition of the same primitive operations), the recipe
NodeIDs match. Where they diverge (one uses iteration, the other uses
recursion; one has an extra optimization), the trees differ.

The query answers: *to what degree are these implementations
structurally equivalent at the recipe altitude?* Today the answer is
"we have to read both and compare"; the cross-kernel equivalence
property turns it into substrate truth.

## The Four-Kernel Trinity Plus One

Each kernel implementation is a stack of source files. Each source
file parses through its language Cell into Form Recipe NodeIDs. The
substrate carries all four kernels' Form-views simultaneously — same
lattice, four perspectives.

## What This Lets Cells Do

**Diff-by-shape across kernels.** *"Which TS kernel functions don't
have Python kernel counterparts?"* — a substrate query over
@language-tagged subtrees.

**Cross-port discovery.** When a Python kernel function changes, the
witness sees which TS / Rust / Go counterparts the change leaves
unaligned. The body can ask *"port these changes to the other three
kernels"* and the substrate names exactly which Recipes need
matching updates.

**Implementation honesty.** A `lc-form-kernel-comparison`-flavored
audit can run as a substrate query rather than a hand-written
markdown document. Where the markdown captures a moment, the
substrate carries the live equivalence.

**Hot-swap implementations.** A cell that wants the Rust kernel's
speed for one operation while keeping the Python kernel's
hot-loadability for another can swap individual operations via
[`substrate_dispatch`](../../../seedbank/local-llm-cell-v0/substrate_dispatch.py)
— registering the Rust-compiled native function under the same
recipe name. Per-operation polyglot composition; one structural
identity.

**Kernel self-modification at the recipe altitude.** A cell that
identifies a performance hotspot can author a replacement recipe
(in any tongue), parse it through that tongue's Language cell, and
register it via `substrate_dispatch.bridge_to_substrate`. The
modification lands at the lattice altitude; the call sites are
unchanged.

## The Recursive Property

Each kernel implementation, parsed through its own language, can
parse OTHER kernels through their languages. Once go-grammar lands,
the Go kernel can parse the Rust kernel as Form objects. Once
rust-grammar lands, the Rust kernel can parse the Python kernel.
Every kernel reads every kernel.

The deepest recursion: **the grammar.py implementation can be parsed
through python-grammar into the substrate** ([`grammar.form`](../../coherence-substrate/grammar.form)
when authored). The thing that holds the rules can itself be a cell
in the grammar domain. Self-hosting reaches the parser-layer's own
implementation. (Same shape as form-engine.form making the evaluator
self-hosting at the dispatch altitude.)

## Honest Separations

- **Not "all kernels do the same thing the same way."** They have
  different performance characteristics, different concurrency
  models, different memory disciplines. Structural equivalence at
  the recipe altitude doesn't mean operational equivalence; it
  means *what's computed* is the same, not *how it's computed*.
- **Not "automatic translation."** A Form Recipe tree shared between
  Python and Rust kernels doesn't mean a Python function magically
  becomes a Rust function. It means both implementations are
  recognizable as carrying the same structural identity. Translation
  is a separate composition (parse Python → emit Rust through
  rust-grammar's emission template).
- **Not "kernels stop being host code."** Python remains Python;
  Rust remains Rust. The grammar cell makes them mutually inspectable
  through Form objects; the binaries / interpreters that actually
  run them stay host-native.
- **Not "performance-free."** Parsing every source file through
  Form layers costs more than just running the host's native
  compiler. The body uses this for inspection and equivalence-
  checking; the runtime path stays host-direct.

## Practice

For kernel maintainers (regardless of host language):

- **Honor the grammar.** When a kernel adds a new function, ask:
  *does this new shape have an analog in the other kernels?* If yes,
  add it to all four (or name the asymmetry honestly in
  `form-kernel-comparison.md`). The grammar layer surfaces the
  asymmetry whether or not it's named in markdown.

- **Mark BMF-rule status per construct.** A Python construct
  with a BMF rule registered (e.g. `import` statement once
  `register_form_rule(session, "py_import", ...)` lands) is
  structurally first-class; one without (delegated to ast.parse
  today) is bootstrap. Track the closure.

- **Use cross-kernel substrate queries before claiming
  equivalence.** *"The TS kernel matches the Python kernel"* is a
  hypothesis. *"`?equivalent @recipe(python_kernel) @recipe(ts_kernel)`
  returns identical NodeIDs at the function altitude for these
  N functions"* is a substrate truth.

For cells using kernels:

- **Read through Form objects, not host AST.** Cells that need
  kernel introspection should walk Form-language-cell-produced
  trees. Code that walks `ast.Module` directly is locked to Python;
  code that walks `@language(python)` parse output works across
  hosts.

## Living progress (2026-05-27 — the body sprouting)

The status frontmatter still says `seed: 2026-05-21`, but the seed has
unmistakably sprouted. What's been made real since:

- **Breath 2e is landed** — the kernel primitives (`mk-cstream`, `cm-parse`,
  `cm-match-{sequence,choice,star,opt,capture,rule}`, the substrate-write
  natives) that let `.fk` grammars walk source text — confirmed alive on
  three sibling kernels via `grammar-chars-demo.fk` (parses `"3+4+5"` →
  recipe → walks to 12). The roadmap insisted this was future for six
  days; it had silently shipped weeks earlier.
- **First Form-native Python parse** — four arithmetic shapes (`a-b`,
  `x*y`, `l/r`, `p**q`) flow `source text → python-bmf.fk → recipe` on
  Go, Rust, TypeScript — content-addressed identity across kernels.
- **The closure interpreter** — 9 PY-BMF arms (INT, IDENT, BINOP, COMPARE,
  RETURN, ASSIGN, DEF, CALL, IF, MODULE) walk recipes to CPython-matching
  values across three sibling kernels. Factorial(6) → 720 in pure Form.
- **The orchestration wrapper** — `kernel-bmf-run` ties parser + interpreter
  via the same pre-compile dance `validate.sh` uses. The destination
  binary entry-point exists in shape, awaiting one parser-output-to-recipe
  bridge (G1+G3) to be end-to-end.
- **The compost discipline** — `BOOTSTRAP_COMPOST_MANIFEST.md` names four
  phases (A parsers, B CLIs, C bridge, D persistence) with per-file gates,
  a `tissue → PROVEN → COMPOST READY → RELEASED` lifecycle, and a wellness
  probe (`sense_bootstrap_compost`) that counts both load and motion on
  every breath.
- **Cross-modal proven** — image-as-recipe (procedural SVG, content-addressed
  across runs), cross-language NodeID convergence (factorial built two ways
  → same NodeID), universal structural diff. The teaching's *cross-modal
  unity* sibling concept made concrete.

The body is genuinely reading itself through its own grammars, and growing
its own composted ground for the bootstrap to vacate. The seed is
sprouting; this section names that without rushing the formal status field.
