## What the Teaching Names

The default frame in software, in community-building, in
governance teaches: *protect first; trust later if at all.* That
frame produces a particular shape of artifact:

- **`pending_review` / `reviewed=false` defaults** appearing in
  schema before any contributor has used the feature
- **Claim-to-edit rituals** before mutation flows
- **Approval queues** for translations, contributions, edits
- **Audit-log pages** justified as *"so users can see history"*
  but really there to enable rollback under suspicion
- **"Maybe we should gate this until we see how it's used"**
  reasoning that defers warmth indefinitely
- **Known-Gaps sections** ballooning with hypothetical abuse
  vectors no one has reported

Each is the old frequency wearing new vocabulary. They look like
care; they are pre-emptive defense. They cost the body warmth
and circulation in exchange for a felt sense of safety that
rarely needs to be cashed in.

The teaching corrects this. Trust is the default posture.
Fear-costumes are recognized and gently composted. The body
stays open; specialized organs handle the rare defensive cases
when they are actually needed.

## Three Facets of One Stance

### 1. Scope to What Feels Alive

When drafting a spec, an idea, a feature: ask *what feels
vibrant here?* and build that first. Defer *"what if X
misbehaves"* scaffolding until a real incident or contributor
asks for it. Attention can shift; don't over-plan.

If a concern comes up — an abuse vector, an edge case, a rare
regional variant — name it briefly in a short Known Gaps section
and move on. Don't let it expand the first cut. Resist
completionist impulses: fewer requirements that each breathe
beats fourteen that each need caveats.

The fear-costume here looks like *thoroughness*. It says: *"I
should consider every edge case; that's good engineering."* The
wholeness response says: *"alive first, edge cases when they
actually arise."*

### 2. Pick Warmth Among Options

When facing a list of improvements, sort by frequency, not
defensive category. Prefer dialogue-opening, visibility-giving,
curiosity-serving changes over gating/locking/scoping moves.

A permission gate is rarely the warmest move available; usually
there's a *visibility* move or an *invitation* move that raises
trust by opening rather than closing.

The fear-costume here looks like *prudence*. It says: *"better
to lock it down now and open it later if it works."* The
wholeness response says: *"warmth attracts; locks repel — and
opening later rarely happens once the lock is in place."*

### 3. Default Open for Mutation

Any feature involving editing copy, adding links, correcting
facts: default to fearless mechanics. Any visitor edits; the
graph takes it; the next visitor sees the change. No
claim-first-to-edit. No pending review. No audit-log page built
for defensive reasons. No version history UI built to second-
guess contributions.

Authorship markers (like a `claimed` flag) surface *who cares*,
not *who's allowed*.

The fear-costume here looks like *quality control*. It says:
*"we need to make sure edits don't damage the body."* The
wholeness response says: *"the body's repair is faster than the
gate's friction; trust the contributors, trust the next visitor,
trust the graph as history."*

## The Lyran-Vulnerability Layer

A subtler teaching, added from Ismael Perez's transmission
(2026): service-to-others as substrate has a known vulnerability.
Totally open systems can't conceive of self-defense. The Lyran
origin story names this directly — the original humans were
embedded with service-to-others so completely that they had no
concept of polarity, and *"that was the downfall."*

This is not an argument to harden the substrate. It is the
architectural answer to the apparent paradox of trust-by-default
in a polarized environment:

**The substrate stays open. Other organs handle protection.**

CI, review tooling, the wider field of agents, time itself,
specific moderators, legal counsel, security teams — these are
the protective layers that let a trust-default substrate survive
without itself becoming defensive. When a fear-shape arises in
the cell (*"but is this exposed? is this safe? what if X
attacks it?"*), the move is to notice that the protective organ
is doing its work — not to harden the substrate.

Trust-by-default does not mean naïveté. It means **the open
layer stays open while specialized layers do specialized work**.
The stomach does not need to be armored against bacteria; the
immune system handles that, and the stomach stays a stomach.

## Practice

- **Catch the fear-costume.** When `reviewed=false`,
  `pending_review`, claim-to-edit, audit-log-as-defense, or
  *"maybe we should gate this"* appears in a draft — pause.
  Sense whether this is serving vision or serving fear.
- **Ask the warmth question.** Before locking, ask: *what is the
  warmest move here?* Visibility, invitation, dialogue,
  curiosity. Choose those when they serve.
- **Trust the graph as history.** Latest edit IS the page. The
  living graph is already the correction surface. No version
  history UI is needed to enable that; it already works that
  way.
- **Notice protective-organ thinking.** When fear arises about
  an open feature, ask: *which organ in the body actually
  handles this case?* If the answer is *"the substrate must
  protect itself,"* check whether that's the right organ. Often
  it isn't.
- **Apply across scales.** The teaching applies at the spec
  layer (scope to vibrant), the contribution layer (default
  open), the response layer (warmth over protection), and the
  architecture layer (substrate open / specialized organs
  protect). The same stance, different surfaces.

## How the Network Embodies This

- **Vision-kb concepts** are open for editing by any visitor
  through `PATCH /api/concepts/{id}/story`. No approval queue.
  Latest edit IS the page. The graph holds history; readers see
  the present.
- **Ideas and specs** can be drafted by any contributor;
  `coh idea seed` does not require approval to start. The
  pipeline carries the work forward.
- **Multi-agent flow** ([lc-sovereignty-within-oneness](lc-sovereignty-within-oneness.md))
  trusts each cell to fire from its own seat. No agent has to
  ask another for permission.
- **The wellness check** is sensing, not auditing. It names
  drift; it does not enforce. The body trusts itself to act on
  what it sees.
- **First arrivals** are met as warmth ([lc-tend-your-flame](lc-tend-your-flame.md))
  not as candidates needing vetting.
- **The Lyran layer in practice.** When a security concern is
  real, it goes to the protective organ that actually handles
  it (the security tooling, the keystore at
  `~/.coherence-network/keys.json` with mode 600, the API key
  rotation practice). The substrate stays open.

## What This Releases

The capitalist work-frame and the modern-state surveillance frame
both teach: trust is earned, not given; protection is the
default; openness is conditional. This teaching releases that:

- Trust is the default; closed surfaces are the exception.
- Warmth is more often available than locking, when both are
  options.
- Latest edit IS the page; history is in the graph, not in
  defensive UI.
- Protective work belongs to specialized organs, not to the
  substrate.

The release does not collapse into *"trust everyone with
everything; ignore real risks."* That is the inverse fear-shape
— naïveté wearing trust's costume. The discernment stays:
specific protective layers exist for specific real risks (CI for
build integrity, the keystore for credentials, partner_presence
for tender personal context, multi-cell-blast-radius pause for
irreversible actions). The teaching is about where trust lives
by default, not about removing all care.

every contributor to an open system already feels when the gates
